Who We Are and What We Do

Chasia Levin was one of a growing number of people, especially women, whose lung cancer is often initially misdiagnosed because they do not meet the “profile” – they don’t have a smoking history.  It was her losing battle with late stage lung cancer that inspired her daughter Susan to become the founder of Lung Cancer Circle of Hope (LCCH).  In January, 2006, Susan Levin, Brent Sheehan, whose mother is a lung cancer survivor, and Susan Spagnola, Esq. whose brother is a lung cancer survivor, incorporated the only group based in New Jersey solely devoted to increasing awareness of this disease.

LCCH is committed to grassroots efforts to increase awareness of the #1 cancer killer of men and women.  We have dedicated ourselves to providing a voice for lung cancer patients, family members and all those at risk.

Our educational programs have touched countless numbers of people residing in our home state as well as  across the country.  To date, we have co-sponsored symposiums entitled Lung Cancer: Dispelling Myths, Dispensing Facts in Newark, Neptune (twice), Teaneck, Morristown (twice) New Brunswick, Princeton, Freehold, and Brick Township and in Hunterdon County.  The hospitals we’ve worked with include Holy Name, Centra State, Medical Center at Princeton, Jersey Shore University Hospital, Saint Peters University Medical Center, St. Michael’s, the Ocean Medical Center and Morristown Memorial.

In November, 2007, LCCH sponsored a program entitled Women and Lung Cancer which focused on the known differences in risk factors and treatment of lung cancer in women.

In January, 2008, we co-sponsored programs that recognized January as National Radon Action Month partnering with Gilda's Club of North New Jersey, the Middlesex County Department of Health and the Union County Cancer Coalition.

We have participated in Health Fairs in the following municipalities and counties: Trenton, Woodbridge, Springfield, Bedminster, Hoboken, Hackensack, West Orange, Princeton Borough and Township, Union, Englewood, Wayne, as well as Bergen and Camden Counties.

Our organization is supportive of legislative efforts to regulate radon detection and mitigation in schools, nurseries and residential buildings.  We applaud State Legislators who have taken to heart the US Surgeon General’s warning that radon is a leading cause of lung cancer. LCCH has also encouraged County Cancer Coalitions throughout NJ to introduce radon awareness programs aimed at educating the public to the dangers of this gas.

Lung Cancer Circle of Hope is proud to announce the Chasia Fund for lung cancer discovery named in memory of Chasia Levin. The money raised will serve as a catalyst for increased interest and commitment to lung cancer research..

We know the journey to find the cure is a long and arduous one.  We are committed to staying the course.  We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and therefore all donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
